So i've heard a lot of people asking these questions and a lot of people seem to be confused or maybe even a little misinformed as to what shampoo is. I'm going to take a minute to try and help clarify this for you :)
it seems some people think that "soap" and "shampoo" are entirely different things and that somehow "soap" can't be "shampoo" and that one is "safe" and the other isn't...blah blah blah on and on it goes lol, so lets start here shall we?
"what is shampoo?" SHAMPOO is a WORD it's not an actual thing, it's a word used to describe something we wash hair (and sometimes carpets) with. Shampoo can be anything we use to clean hair with, anything from bars, liquids, gels, powder, cream etc and made from detergents, surfactants, soap (aka saponified oils), cornstarch etc. There's your standard shampoo you use in the shower, there's waterless shampoo, dry shampoo, bar shampoo, "cleansing conditioner" type shampoos like "wen" So as you can clearly see shampoo is simply a describing word it is not a particular thing made from one particular kind of ingredients. Are all of these things safe? well no, dry shampoo wouldn't be safe for locs because it is a powder that must be brushed through the hair to remove excess oils and you can't brush locs. i think cleansing conditioner type shampoos are simply not for locs. the ingredients can cause build up and we really don't want to be "conditioning" our locs with those kinds of "conditioners". Not all detergent based shampoos are going to be safe for locs just as not all soap based products are going to be safe for use on locs but there absolutely are both Soap based and detergent based products out there that are entirely safe for use on your locs.
But Heather, which is better? soap or detergent? Well the TRUTH is ... that's actually all a matter of your own personal preference!! Both types of products can be safe and both can clean hair equally well its just a matter of what you personally enjoy and your expectations. Obviously I prefer soap over detergent that's probably why I make soap based products lol but if i tried to tell you that soap was far superior at cleaning hair or safer for dreadlocks than an appropriate detergent based product id simply be passing off my own personal preferences as "fact" when it's not. I've used several detergent based products that i was actually able to procure locally that were completely safe for use on locs, had relatively "natural" ingredients, were moderately priced and did a good job cleaning my locs. I would not continue to use them regularly because detergents have a tendency to really dry out my hair and factually detergents are more drying than soap perhaps that is something that would be of benefit for you but it's just not for me.
Sadly i think a lot of personal preferences are being paraded around as "facts" often to help sell a product. I mean if someone who makes or sells soap is telling you that detergents aren't safe and should be avoided but this soap that they happen to sell is far superior and nothing else is safe, well you do the math.
I make soap based shampoo, i personally prefer to use soap in every area of my washing from my hair to my kitchen floors to my laundry i don't use detergents i use soap :) im sure you can find laundry detergent that cleans just as well but i prefer to wash my clothes with good old soap i make myself :) soap has a tendency to clean more gently than detergents but the both CLEAN and that is their intended purpose :)
i'd like to blog a little more regularly but my communication skills are sub par and im not good at time management but hey, im trying and that is after all what matters right? i will try to address things i see being asked or discussed repeatedly. If there is something you would like to see blogged about feel free to let me know!!! Please do remember im only one person, one person with an awful lot on her plate from puppies to waaay to many children :)
